Beavers Outlast Cougars, 59-50

PULLMAN, Wash. (AP) - Chris Stephens scored 23 points Saturday night to lead Oregon State past Washington State 59-50.

Wesley Washington, making his first start for Oregon State (10-8, 3-4 Pac-10), had season highs of 10 points, five rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots.

Robbie Cowgill had 13 points, seven rebounds, three steals and two blocks for Washington State (9-7, 2-5). Kyle Weaver added 12 points, eight rebounds, five assists and two steals for the Cougars, who have lost four straight.

Oregon State led almost all the way, including 29-27 at the half. The Cougars briefly went ahead 45-44 with 8:55 to go on Cowgill's turnaround jumper, and WSU tied the game at 48-48 on another Cowgill turnaround jumper with 4:29 left.

Stephens pushed Oregon State ahead for good on a left-handed floater with 3:06 to go. Washington, who'd been averaging just 2.1 points per game, tacked on two free throws with 2:07 left and then sank an 8-foot baseline jumper with 1:28 left.

The Beavers clinched the game by hitting five of six free throws in the final minute.

Washington helped limit Josh Akognon, Washington State's leading scorer with 11.6 points per game, to seven points. Akognon was 3-for-14 from the field, including 1-for-8 on 3-pointers.

Washington State shot just 38 percent from the field, including 6 percent (1-for-16) on 3-pointers, and 50 percent from the free-throw line. Oregon State hit 40 percent from the field, 46 percent from 3-point range and 72 percent at the line.

Both starting point guards rem ain sidelined with injuries, Oregon State's Lamar Hurd with a groin injury and Washington State's Derrick Low with an injured foot.

Washington, a sophomore guard in his first year at Oregon State after one season of junior college, played a season-high 30 minutes in his 10th game of the year.
