California Track and Field Successful at Their First Indoor Meet

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The California men's and women's track and field team opened their 2006 campaign at the Modrall Sperling Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M. Sixteen Golden Bears finished within the Top 10 in their individual events. Three California athletes posted indoor provisional qualifying marks on Saturday.
The women boasted five individuals who finished in the top five of their events. Senior Antonette Carter finished fourth in the 60m with a final time of 7.38 (an indoor provisional qualifying mark). Also competing in the event, redshirt freshman Angela Pressy (7.61/15th), freshman Kandi Bonty (7.77/20th), senior Osarheiman Omwanghe (7.79/22nd), senior Qadriyyah Abdullah (7.86/24th), freshman Francesca Weems (7.91/28th) and freshman Lollie Onipede (7.95/30th).
Omwanghe placed fourth in the 60m hurdles (8.44). Senior Tiffany Johnson ran a 24.89 in the 200m dash placing her in 12th. Freshman Mackenizie Pierce (2:13.58) and senior Lindsay Maclise (2:16.08) finished fourth and seventh, respectively in the 800m. Also on the track, the 4 x 400 relay team of Omwanghe, Bonty, Weems and freshman Artensia Young came in seventh (3:35.05).
In the jumps for the women, freshman Inika McPherson finished second in the high jump in her first collegiate meet, with an indoor provisional qualifying mark of 1.78m/5-10.00. Carter continued to impress, in the long jump she finished sixth (5.78m/18-11.75).
Sophomore triple jumper Cassandra Strickland opened her 2006 season with a third place finish in the event with the marks of 12.59m/41-03.75. Young also competed in the triple jump, placing sixth (12.39m/40-07.75).
On the men's side, junior Teak Wilburn returned to action after redshirting the 2005 season. Wilburn recorded a second-place finish in the men's high jump. He posted a 2.20m/7-02.50, an indoor provisional qualifying mark. In the same event, sophomore Ed Wright finished fifth (J2.12m/6-11.50).
Competing on the track for the Golden Bear men, junior Thomas Mack placed fourth (8.127) in the 60m hurdles. Competing additionally in the event for Cal, freshman Jordan Paul (8.48/13th), junior Jonas Hallgrimsson (8.69/18th), sophomore Craig Gallimore (9.04/27th).
Freshman Jake Hanson finished 12th (6.95) in the 60m. Conrad (22.09) and Hanson (22.14) finished ninth and 11th, respectively in the 200m dash.
Cal's sophomore Alex McClary placed fifth (1:52.99) in the 800m. His brother, Andy, finished two spots down in seventh with the marks of 1:55.26.
The Golden Bears return to action next weekend, the team will split between the Arizona-California Challenge in Flagstaff, Ariz., on Friday, Jan. 27 and the Washington Invitational in Seattle, Wash., on Jan. 27-28.
