No. 21 USC Gets Two Wins In Saturday's Doubleheader

LOS ANGELES, CALIF. -- The 21st-ranked USC men's tennis team notched its first two dual match wins of 2006 in a busy and successful Saturday at Marks Stadium. The Trojans opened the day with a 6-1 win over visiting Santa Clara, and then closed out the afternoon with a 5-2 victory over UC Irvine. USC is now 2-1 in nonconferece dual matches after opening the year with a loss to top-ranked Virginia earlier in the week.

The Trojans swept doubles play in both matches, and kept almost identical singles ladders against each opponent. Dejan Cvetkovic played at the No. 1 slot for USC and picked up a pair of victories to help the Trojans' cause. Kaes Van't Hof locked down the No. 2 singles position and cruised past his Santa Clara opponent, Kevin McQuaid, before battling through a tighter match with UC Irvine's Victor Lamm to win 6-4, 7-6 on a 7-5 second-set tiebreaker. Also winning a pair of singles matches on teh day for USC was Adam Loucks at the No. 3 position. Loucks had two decisive wins with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Santa Clara's Blane Shields in the morning, and a 6-2, 6-2 win over UC Irvine's Mustafa Ulukan in the afternoon. Rounding the Trojans' double winners was No. 5 singles player Chong Wang, who downed Santa Clara's Brian Brogan 6-3, 6-0, and then UC Irvine's Alex Sundling 6-1, 6-0.

Against Santa Clara, Garrett Snyder helped USC to victory with a 6-3, 7-5 win in the Trojans' 6-1 victory over the Broncos. Santa Clara's Tommy Hicks tallied the Broncos' lone win with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Aaron Badart. The Trojans closed out the day with a 5-2 defeat of UC Irvine on a sweep at doubles and four singles wins. UC Irvine pulled out singles wins at No. 4 with Aaron Ellis' 7-6, 6-4 win over Snyder and Trevor Dobson's 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) win over Nathan Stadler at the No. 6 position

USC returns to action next week against UC Santa Barbara. The match is set for 1:30 p.m. on Jan. 24 at Marks Stadium.
