Women Break Five Meet Records at WSU Indoor Track Meet

PULLMAN, Wash. -- Five women, including three from Washington State University, broke meet records Saturday at the Fourth Annual WSU Indoor Open Track & Field Meet.

Cougar All-American heptathlete Diana Pickler reached an NCAA Provisional Qualifying mark and PR setting the meet record with her winning high jump of 5-feet, 10 inches (1.78m). Pickler's 2005 high jump mark of 5-8 (1.73m) was the meet record. WSU's Julie Pickler and Robin Mikesh both cleared 5-7 (1.70m) for second and third place.

WSU senior All-American Tamara Diles won the pole vault with an NCAA PQ height of 13-1 1/2 (4.00m). Cougar freshman Tiffany Maskulinski took second in the pole vault with a clearance of 12-7 1/2 (3.85m).

A pair of WSU freshmen joined in the record setting Saturday. Sara Trané, from Sweden, won the 800m with a time of 2:13.30 with three Cougs finishing right behind her. Catie Schuetzle, from Spokane, led a first through fifth finish for the Cougars in the long jump, with a leap of 19-0 3/4 (5.81m).

Former Idaho Vandal and Canadian Olympic team member Angela Whyte broke her own meet record in the 60m hurdles running 8.19 seconds in the prelims. She ran the winning final time of 8.22, both breaking her 2003 record time of 8.28.

Central Washington's Katie Hummell won the 3000m in a meet record time of 10:16.86.

WSU sophomore La Shawnda Porter won both the 60m dash (7.73) and the 200m dash (25.72). Other Cougar women winners included Brandi Probasco-Canda (400m), Collier Lawrence (mile), Sarah Burns (triple jump), and Jessica Zita (unattached, shot put).

On the men's side, Community Colleges of Spokane freshman Rashad Toussaint won both the long jump (22-0 3/4) and the triple jump (49-4 1/2). WSU freshman Moreno Zapata was second in the triple jump with a leap of 48-2 (14.68m).

WSU grabbing victories included James McSwain (60m), Jarrell Nelson (200m), Devin Timpson (400m), Clay Hemlock (800m), Evan Blanshan (unattached, mile), Robert Williams (60m hurdles), and Ryan Thomas (high jump).

Idaho's Russ Winger won the men's shot put with an NCAA PQ throw of 59-9 1/2 (18.22m).

The Cougar Indoor scoring meet will take place next weekend at the WSU Indoor Practice Facility on the Pullman campus. Men's and women's teams from Idaho, Utah State, as well as a women's team from Southern California (USC), will compete with the Cougs in the two-day meet which will include the women's pentathlon and men's heptathlon.
