Jan. 25, 2006
HOUSTON, TEXAS - University of California junior right-hander Brandon Morrow, a third-team preseason All-American in Baseball America, has been named to the initial watch list for the 2006 Roger Clemens Award, which honors the top pitcher in college baseball.
Morrow, a hard-throwing right-hander, was selected a third-team preseason All-American after an outstanding 2005 summer in the prestigious Cape Cod League. He was a Cape Cod League All-Star for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox, striking out 24 batters in 14.7 innings with a 1.84 ERA and three saves. Morrow was also picked as the fifth-best professional prospect out of the Cape Cod League by Baseball America, throwing in the mid 90s with a slider, change-up and split-finger fastball. He made 10 appearances with five starts last spring for Cal, recording 25 strikeouts in 25.0 innings.
The Bears are ranked 25th in Baseball America's preseason Top 25 poll after finishing the 2005 campaign 34-23 and 13-11 (fifth) in the Pac-10. Last season, Cal notched 13 wins against teams that advanced to an NCAA Regional; captured Pac-10 series versus highly-ranked Stanford, Arizona State and Arizona; and swept Long Beach State. The Bears open their 2006 season Feb. 3-5 at UC Irvine, before entertaining San Francisco in their home-opener, Tuesday, Feb. 7 at 2 p.m. at Evans Diamond.
