Men's Tennis Defeats BYU, 6-1
Jan. 25, 2006
LOS ANGELES - The fifth-ranked UCLA men's tennis team dominated visiting BYU Wednesday, posting a 6-1 decision over the Cougars at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. The defending NCAA Champion Bruins improve their record to 2-0 on the year, while BYU falls to 2-2.
Playing with the same three doubles teams as it did in its season opening victory over San Diego last Friday, UCLA jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the match with victories on all three courts.
Singles play saw much of the same, as the Bruins moved out to a 6-0 lead following straight-set wins on five of six courts. With Philipp Gruendler only playing doubles, freshman Michael Look was able to play in the first dual match of his career Wednesday, as he recorded a 6-2, 6-2 decision over Ivan Kokurin at the No. 6 spot.
Jose Lechuga turned in the best performance of the day for the Cougars, as he defeated Bruin junior Aaron Yovan at No. 4 singles, 7-5, 5-7, (12-10).
The Bruins return to action this Friday, hosting No. 28 Boise State at the LATC beginning at 1:30 p.m.
