No. 12 Bruins Blank Rice, 7-0
Jan. 26, 2006
LOS ANGELES - The No. 12-ranked UCLA women's tennis team posted its third shutout in a row Friday afternoon, recording a 7-0 decision over Rice at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. The Bruins, who have yet to give up a point in any dual match this season, improve to 3-0 on the year. Rice falls to 2-1 overall.
Unlike the first two matches of the year, UCLA had a tough battle for the doubles point, as two matches went down to the wire. After registering a quick 8-2 win at court No. 3, UCLA saw itself in a battle at the top two positions. However, UCLA's No. 1 team of Laura Gordon and Riza Zalameda were able to clinch the point with a 9-7 victory over 30th-ranked Blair DiSesa/Alanna Rodgers. Shortly thereafter, the Bruins took another 9-7 decision, this time at court No. 2.
After clawing out the doubles point, the Bruins came out inspired in singles play, winning five matches in straight sets. Sophomore Tracy Lin registered her second 6-0, 6-0 victory in less than a week, as she was the first to finish at the No. 2 position. Next off was 99th-ranked Ashley Joelson, who was a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Medeja Egic at the No. 5 spot. Junior Alex McGoodwin, ranked 77th nationally, clinched the match for UCLA at court No. 3, downing Rodgers, 6-3, 6-0.
Zalameda and Elizabeth Lumpkin were also straight-set winners on the day. Zalameda downed the 30th-ranked DiSesa, 6-2, 6-3 at court No. 1, while Lumpkin was a 6-4, 6-0 winner over Kimberley Patenaude at court No. 6.
Bruin freshman Anna-Viktoria Lind had the toughest match of the afternoon, as she needed a 10-point tiebreaker to eventually down Tiffany Lee, 4-6, 6-3, (10-6) at court No. 4.
UCLA does not have another match until a Feb. 9 showdown with UC Irvine at the Los Angeles Tennis Center beginning at 1:30 p.m.
