Cal Tops No. 23 USC 72-67 On the Road

LOS ANGELES - California had four players finish in double figures as the Bears never trailed on the way to a 72-67 win at No. 23 USC on Friday night in Los Angeles. Alexis Gray-Lawson led all scorers with 19 points, including four 3-pointers for California. Chloe Kerr led the Women of Troy with 18 points, 12 of whic came in the second half as the Trojans worked to cut into California's 38-31 halftime lead. The loss snaps a five-game winning streak for USC (13-6, 7-3) and improves California to 14-6, 6-4.
California led by as much as 10 in the second half before Bears center Devanei Hampton fouled out with five minutes to go, opening up USC's inside game. USC cut into the lead to make it a 3-point game in the final minute of play, but Cal was sharp from the free-throw line in the final minute to keep USC just out of reach.
In addition to Gray-Lawson's game-high 19 points, California got 17 points from Jene Morris, 15 from Ashley Walker and 11 from Hampton. USC's only other double-digit scorer was Eshaya Murphy with 17 points. The Trojans outrebounded the Bears 40-31 in the game, but shot just 53 percent from the free-throw line compared to California's 60 percent effort. The Bears also shot 52 percent from the floor in the upset win, while USC shot 41 percent.
