Eighteen Pac-10 Softball Players Named to 2006 USA Softball Pre-Season Watch List

Feb. 1, 2006

WALNUT CREEK, Calif.-- Eighteen Pac-10 softball players have been named to the USA Softball Pre-Season Watch List, the Amateur Softball Association announced today. The award, which is considered one of the most prestigious honors in women's collegiate softball, is designed to recognize outstanding athletic achievement by female collegiate softball players across the country.

Seven of eight Conference teams were represented on the watch list, the most of any conference. UCLA landed five players to the list, the most by any Pac-10 school. All-American Caitlin Benyi, first team All-Pac-10 selection Andrea Duran, WCWS All-Tournament Team members Emily Zaplotsch and Jodie Legaspi and 2005 Pac-10 Newcomer of the Year, Anjelica Selden round out the Bruin contingent on the list.

Four ARIZONA players made the list, including 2005 Player of the Year finalist and Pac-10 Co-Player of the Year, Caitlin Lowe. Three-time All-American pitcher Alicia Hollowell, two-time All-American Autumn Champion, and first team All-Pac-10 selection Kristie Fox were also recognized.

STANFORD landed three players on the list, including Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year, Lauren Lappin. Lappin is joined by second team All-American Catalina Morris and Pac-10 honorable mention selection, Jackie Rinehart.

WASHINGTON and OREGON STATE each had two representatives on the team. The Huskies landed the only freshman on the 50-member watch list in Danielle Lawrie, along with junior Dominique Lastrapes. Pac-10 Pitcher of the Year, Brianne McGowan, and second team All-Pac-10 selection, Vanessa Iapala, represented the Beavers on the list.

ARIZONA STATE and CALIFORNIA each had one representative on the list. Second-team All-American Kristina Thorson represented the Golden Bears while Katie Burkhart was the lone Sun Devil to be named.

The 2006 Pre-Season Watch List is comprised of 50 players, representing 28 schools and 10 conferences. USA Softball will announce its 25 finalists on April 5th. A player does not have to appear on the initial watch list to be considered as a Top-25 finalist, but once the Top-25 is named, the remaining finalist must be selected from that list.
