MADISON, Wis. - The No. 18 California women's tennis team defeated No. 4 Northwestern, 5-2, Thursday, at the 2006 USTA-ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championships being held at the University of Wisconsin's A.C. Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison, Wis.

'It was a good team effort today,' said 28th-year head coach Jan Brogan. 'Our objectives were to fight, compete hard, play smart and have fun. The overall team result was strong. It was a good way to start the season. We started off winning the doubles point, which is a huge improvement for us.'
