No. 18 Cal Defeats No. 9 Miami, 4-3, in Consolation Semifinals

MADISON, Wis. - The 18th-ranked California women's tennis team defeated ninth-ranked Miami, 4-3, Saturday evening in the consolation semifinals of the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championship at the University of Wisconsin's A.C. Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
With the win, the Bears improve to 4-1 for the season after going 2-1 in the tournament, while the Hurricanes drop to 2-2 after going 1-2 for the weekend.
Cal started out the match sweeping the doubles point, jumping out to a 1-0 lead. Playing in the No. 1 singles spot, Cal's Suzi Babos and Stephanie Kusano defeated Audra Cohen and Audrey Banada, 8-1. Bojana Bobusic and Marion Ravelojaona defeated Ana Rupic and Monika Dancevic, 8-5, in the No. 3 doubles spot. The Bears clinched the doubles point when Suzi Fodor and Claire Ilcinkas teamed up to outlast Melissa Applebaum and Patricia Starzyk, 8-5, in the No. 2 doubles position.
Cal tallied three singles victories for the afternoon, including Ravelojaona's win over Starzyk, in the No. 3 singles spot, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. Kusano outlasted Banada, 6-1, 6-4, playing No.4 singles. Senior Jessica Shu recorded her second victory on the weekend when she defeated Caren Seenauth, 6-0, 6-2, playing No. 6 singles.
The Bears are 21-18 in 12 appearances at the USTA-ITA National Team Indoor Championships.
Cal returns home next weekend to host San Diego State, Friday, Feb. 10 at 1:30 p.m. and UNLV, Saturday, Feb. 11 at 9:30 a.m. Matches will be played at Hellman Tennis Center.
