No. 25 Cal Baseball Falls to UC Irvine, 10-4

IRVINE, CALIF. - UC Irvine (1-1) exploded for four runs in both the fourth and seventh innings on the way to a 10-4 victory over No. 25-ranked California (1-1), Saturday night at Anteater Ballpark in Irvine. The Anteaters tied the season-opening series at one game apiece after Cal won 6-2 Friday night.
The Golden Bears were limited to only three hits through the first eight innings until they scored three runs with five hits in the top of the ninth inning. Freshman pinch hitter Ryan Hanlon led off the ninth with a single to right field, followed by sophomore Taylor Grigsby's single to the right side. Senior Rob Nesbitt then knocked a double down the left field line, scoring Hanlon. Sophomore first baseman Mike Van Winden later scored Nesbitt with a sacrifice fly and freshman Charlie Cutler added an RBI single up the middle, scoring Nesbitt.
Freshman Scott Gorgen was the winning pitcher for UC Irvine, throwing 5.7 innings with only two hits, one unearned run, no walks and three strikeouts. Top hitters for the Anteaters, who finished with 15 hits on the day, included Zach Robinson (2-for-4, three RBI), Spike McDougall (2-for-4, two RBI), Brock Bardeen (3-for-4, two RBI) and Chad Lundahl (3-for-4).
The losing pitcher for the Bears was junior right-hander Michael Cooper, who threw 3.3 innings with eight hits, five runs, four earned runs, one walk and five strikeouts. Freshman Matt Gorgen, twin brother of UCI's Scott Gorgen, also pitched for Cal, throwing 2.0 innings with two hits, no runs and one walk.
The Bears had tallied their first run in the sixth inning when senior Allen Craig reached base on an error, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and was scored on an RBI single by junior left fielder Chris Errecart.
Cal will conclude the three-game series versus UC Irvine, Sunday, Feb. 5 at 1 p.m. at Anteater Ballpark.
