Arizona's Roger Matalonga Named Pac-10 Men's Tennis Player of the Week

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Arizona's Roger Matalonga has been named the Pac-10 Men's Tennis Player of the Week for Jan. 30 - Feb. 5, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Matalonga, who hails from Terrassa, Spain, paired with sophomore Claudio Christen, to win Arizona's first point on Friday, 8-5, over UC Santa Barbara's Nick Brotman and Anders Dalskov.
In the No. 1 singles spot, No. 18 Matalonga easily took the first set over the Gaucho's Brotman, 6-3, before dropping the second set, 7-5. In the third set, Matalonga, down 4-5, was able to fight off five match points to hold serve and even the match at five-all. Brotman then held serve and Matalonga had to fight off two more match points to even the match at six. In the tiebreaker, Matalonga faced four match points before prevailing, 12-10. Matalonga's victory gave No. 55 Arizona the 4-3 dual meet win over No. 69 UC Santa Barbara.
On Sunday, the senior completed Arizona's weekend singles sweep, by defeating Pacific's Jorgen Vestil, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 in the No. 1 singles spot.
This is Matalonga's first Pac-10 Player of the Week honor and first weekly honor all-time for Arizona.
