Husky Golfers Head to Hawaii to Start Spring Season

Feb. 6, 2006

Seattle - The 21st-ranked Washington men's golf team opens its spring season this week at the Waikoloa Intercollegiate Golf Tournament, February 8-10, at the Waikoloa Village Course. The Huskies are one of 21 teams in the field competing for the championship at the 6,791-yard, par-72 Waikoloa Village Course. The tournament is hosted by Hawaii-Hilo.

The field for this year's tournament includes nine teams currently ranked in the top-50 of the latest Golfweek standings. The participating teams (and their current rankings) are: Arizona State (7), Arkansas, Augusta State (45), California-Davis, Colorado (41), Fresno State, Georgia Tech (3), Hawai`i Hilo, Hawai`i, Kansas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State (2), Oregon, Oregon State, Pepperdine (22), Rhode Island, Southern California (43), Stanford, Texas (27), Texas Christian, and Washington (21).

Tee times for the tournament begin at 7 a.m. each day. Participants will be teeing off from both the first and 10th tee.

Washington's lineup for the event will include Zach Bixler, Sterling Clark, James Lepp, Erik Olson and Alex Prugh. Lepp, a senior from Abbottsford, B.C., is the defending NCAA Champion. He led the Huskies in the fall with a 72.08 stroke average and finished second overall at the Big Ten/Pac-10 Challenge in October.

Last season the Husky men's golf team shattered the school's 54-hole tournament scoring record at the Waikoloa Invitational, shooting a 48-under 816 during the three-day event to better the previous mark by 18 strokes. Washington's fourth-place finish was spearheaded by Lepp, who finished second overall by shooting an 18-under 198 for the tournament - a mark that broke the school's 54-hole tournament record for individuals by four strokes. Lepp's final round 7-under 65 at Waikoloa tied for the best gross score of the 2005 season, matched only by the 7-under 63 that he shot during the final round of the NCAA Championship.
