Feb. 6, 2006
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Stanford senior guard Chris Hernandez has been named the U.S. Bank Pacific-10 Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week for January 30 - Feb. 5, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Hernandez, who hails from Fresno, Calif., led the Cardinal to a road sweep of the Oregon schools, averaging 24.0 points on 15-of-24 shooting (.625). On Thursday, Hernandez hit a three-pointer with 11.3 seconds left on the clock to give Stanford the 57-56 win over the Ducks. He scored 20 points, including four three-pointers and was a perfect 4-of-4 from the free throw line. He also added three assists, three rebounds, and a steal in 36 minutes on the court in Eugene.
On Saturday, Hernandez scored a season-high 28 points to lead Stanford to a 71-64 win over the Beavers. Hernandez shot 9-of-13 (.692) from the field, including 4-of-6 (.667) from beyond the arc and 6-of-6 at the foul line, to take over for the Cardinal after their leading scorer, Matt Haryasz, left the game with an eye injury in the first half.
Hernadez has now drained 21 straight free throws, dating back to Jan. 26 vs. Washington State. In Conference play, the senior guard is 48-of-50 from the line (.960), and shooting .509 from three-point range.
Stanford (12-7 overall, 8-3 Pac-10) will travel to Bay Area rival California on Thurs., Feb. 9, before facing No. 5 Gonzaga on Sat., Feb. 11 in Spokane, Wash.
This is the second weekly honor for Hernandez and Stanford's 38th Player of the Week all-time.
