Sun Devil Gymnastics Hosts No. 12 Stanford Friday

:This Week --The No. 10 ranked Arizona State University's gymnastics team continues its two-meet homestand with a Pacific-10 Conference matchup with No. 12 Stanford, on Friday, Febuary 10 at 7:30 p.m. MT at Wells Fargo Arena. The Sun Devils, under 26th-year head coach John Spini, are in a new era of Sun Devil gymnastics with the $2 million John Spini Gymnastics Training Facility on the ASU campus. It is the first time in five years that the squad has trained on campus. Spini looks to lead the Sun Devils to an NCAA regional berth for the eighth time in the last 10 seasons. Spini is currently ASU's longest-tenured head coach, and is tied forsecond on the all-time Sun Devil head coaching list with long-time track and field mentor Senon 'Baldy' Castillo. Former Sun Devil women's tennis coaching legend Anne Pittmanholds the distinction as the longest-tenured ASU head coach in school history at 31 seasons. With a 196.175-196.1 loss to No. 2 Utah last Friday, his regular-season record is now 310-123-2 over 25-plus seasons. His won-loss mark at home is 164-26-1.ASU In The Rankings --ASU debuted at No. 14 in the GymInfo rankings, based on the preseason coaches poll released in December. ASU climbed two spots to No. 10 in this week's rankings, which are based upon total season average score. Pac-10 Conference foe UCLA was selected third in the preseason poll with 579 votes and three first-place bids. ASU received 293 votes and was neighbored inthe standings by No. 9 Stanford (417), No. 13 Oregon State (331), No. 17 Arizona (188) and No. 18 Washington (185). For info access Faces Nation's Finest --Arizona State will face eight of the nation's Top 25 teams in 2006, according to the preseason coaches poll. Of the squads the Sun Devils meet in `06, Utah was No. 2, UCLA No. 3, Stanford No. 9, Iowa State No. 11, Oregon State No. 13, Arizona No. 17, Washington No. 18 and Denver No. 21 in the preseason coaches poll. Five of those meetings will be at home in WellsFargo Arena.ASU In The Rankings/Individual & Team Events --Freshman Nicole Harris is ranked 13th nationally in the all-around (39.117) while senior Ashley Kelly is 22nd (39.044). Kelly ranks 1st (9.881) on the balance beam while Harris is 9th (9.825). Junior Cassandra Jusino is 20th on the floor exercise (9.817). ASU is ranked 10th nationally as a team and first on the balance beam (49.91). The Sun Devils are ranked 14th on floor exercise (48.694), 17th on the uneven parallel bars (48.519) and 9th on vault (48.987).ASU Versus Stanford --Arizona State University leads the all-time series with Stanford, 36-16. The Sun Devils lead in regular-season meets (15-7) and in postseason competition (21-9). ASU is 7-1 at home versus the Cardinal in Wells Fargo Arena, 6-5 in Palo Alto and 2-1 at neutral sites. The Sun Devils lostto the Cardinal in Palo Alto last year, 195.3-191.575, in a dual meet and in the Pac-10 Conference Championships.
