Cal Baseball Falls 4-3 in 10 Innings to San Francisco

Feb. 7, 2006

BERKELEY, CALIF. - San Franciso's Stefan Gartrell had a squib hit that just got past California senior reliever Alex Trafton, scoring Joey Railey in the top of the 10th inning and leading USF to a 4-3 extra inning win Tuesday at Evans Diamond. It was the second one-run loss in-a-row for the Golden Bears, who fell to 1-3 on the year. The Dons won their first game of the season to improve to 1-3.

Railey scored the winning run after leading off the top of the 10th with a double to right center field off of Trafton (0-1, 2.0 innings, two hits, one run, one walk). He was then sacrificed to third base by Tavo Hall, setting up the winning run after Gartrell was jammed by Trafton, but was able to get the ball just past the outstretched glove of Trafton.

Reliever Brian Anderson was USF's winning pitcher, throwing the final two innings with no hits, no runs, one walk and one strikeout. Anderson had walked pinch-hitter Jordan Karnofsky to lead off the bottom of the 10th. Kyle Spraker then sacrificed pinch runner Taylor Grigbsy to second, but Anderson was able to get senior shortstop Allen Craig to line-out to third base and sophomore third baseman Jose Satin to pop out to first base to end the game.

The Bears had started the contest's scoring on a two-run homer by junior left fielder Chris Errecart off of USF starter Jason Dufloth in the bottom of the first inning. The Dons came back with three runs in the top of the fourth on Luke Sommer's RBI single and a two-run homer by Daniel Morales off of Cal freshman starter Craig Bennigson.

The Bears were able to tie the game, 3-3, in the bottom of the fifth on a RBI single by Craig, and then neither team was able to score in the next three innings. Craig and junior second baseman Brett Munster both finished the day 2-for-3, while Mike Van Winden and Errecart recorded the other two Cal hits.
