BEARS LOOK FOR BIG PERFORMANCES AGAINST STANFORD
Third-ranked Cal (10-0, 6-0 Pac-10) visits No. 4 Stanford (12-1, 3-1) Saturday for a showdown of conference and national powers. The Golden Bears are looking for their second undefeated season in three years, and they will be in familiar territory this weekend. In 2004, Cal defeated Stanford, 151-149, in Palo Alto to finish with an undefeated record. It was Cal's first win over Stanford since 1978 and only the Bears' third victory ever in the rivalry.
Fourth-ranked Stanford enters Saturday's meet after splitting the Jan. 27-28 weekend in southern California. The Cardinal suffered their only loss of the season against No. 7 UCLA and defeated No. 11 USC. Cal defeated both Southern California schools.Following Saturday's meet, visit CalBears.com for complete results and recaps.
A LOOK BACK AT 2004
The last time Cal defeated Stanford was Feb. 14, 2004, in a meet at Avery Aquatic Center on the Stanford campus. The win marked the first time the Bears beat Stanford since 1978 and only the third time Cal has ever beaten the Cardinal.
Heading into the final event, Cal trailed by seven points but made up the deficit with first- and third-place finishes in the 400-meter free relay. That first-place finish came in an NCAA `A' time of 3:41.20 with a team of Natalie Coughlin, Danielle Becks, Micha Burden, and Lauren Medina.
Current Cal seniors Ashley Chandler and Helen Silver provided pivotal victories, with Chandler winning the 400 free (4:08.91) and 800 free (8:29.44), and Silver taking first in both the 100 back (1:00.96) and 200 back (2:11.34).
