No. 14 Huskies Dispatch Denver, 7-0

Feb. 10, 2006

SEATTLE - The 14th-ranked Husky men's tennis team was up to the challenge of a game University of Denver squad, sweeping the Pioneers 7-0 at the Nordstrom Tennis Center this evening. Junior Alex Slovic capped off the sweep with a third-set super-tiebreak win over Denver's 28th-ranked Adam Holmstrom in the top singles slot.

The only set the Huskies dropped on the night to the No. 75 Pioneers came in Slovic's first set against Holmstrom. Slovic, ranked 32nd, responded with a 6-3 second set win and then won 10-7 in the third set super-tiebreak.

Husky Head Coach Matt Anger appreciated his team's readiness.

'Denver had some talent out there,' Anger said. 'I thought they were very competitive and played very hard. If we hadn't been that ready we would have lost a few more sets.'

At second and third singles, UW's pair of senior transfers from France continued to cruise. Pierre Metenier was the first player through, winning 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 over Nejc Smole. Jean-Noel Insausti ran his record to 4-0 and defeated his first ranked opponent--92nd-ranked Niklas Persson--by a 6-2, 6-0 mark.

'Pierre and Jean-Noel are just a blast at practice and with the guys,' said Anger. 'Also they've come in taking the hardest classes and they are surviving so far. Tonight Jean-Noel really hit some great shots out there; for about ten minutes out there it was a little bit of a highlight show.'

Daniel Chu had a routine 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles over Steve Flaks. Sophomore Andy Kuharszky rolled through his first set, 6-1, at fourth singles, then was pushed to a second-set tiebreak by Viktor Zetterholm. Kuharszky came through seven points to four in the breaker. Freshman Klaus Jank remained a perfect 5-0 in dual play, knocking off Aljosa Nipic in straight sets at sixth singles.

The Huskies had no trouble winning their fifth straight doubles point. Insausti and Mike Ricks were the first to finish, winning 8-2 at No. 3 doubles. Jank and Kuharszky at No. 2 singles and Slovic and Chu in the top spot finished within moments of each other, both teams scoring 8-4 wins.

The Huskies have one final chance to tune up for next weekend's National Team Indoor Championships. UW hosts UC Santa Barbara on Sunday, February 12, at 1:30 p.m. at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
