Cal Hands UNLV First Loss of the Season
Feb. 11, 2006
BERKELEY - The sixth-ranked California women's tennis team handed No. 38 UNLV its first loss of the season Saturday morning at Hellman Tennis Center, downing the Rebels 6-1. The Bears improve to 6-1, while UNLV drops to 4-1.
'Our three objectives for the match were to pay attention to detail, play smart and learn how to be better problem solvers on the court,' said head coach Jan Brogan. 'Today, they paid attention to detail on the doubles court three. We need to do that better in the No. 1 doubles position. They played smart and that is how we won the doubles point. We competed hard on all three courts, but we need to learn how to use our strengths. Overall it was a good team effort, and a good weekend to build momentum for our trip to Los Angeles next week.'
Cal won the doubles point to start off the morning, winning two out of three matches. Suzi Fodor and Claire Ilcinkas notched their second victory for the weekend, defeating Sharon Marin and Claire Smith, 9-7, playing No. 2 doubles. Marion Ravelojaona and Bojana Bobusic also recorded their second victory in two days, outlasting Cindy Treber and Linda Tempelfelde, 8-3, in the No. 3 doubles position. Suzi Fodor and Stephanie Kusano dropped the match to Elena Gantcheva and Nikol Dimitrova, 9-7, on the No. 1 doubles court.
In singles play, Cal grabbed five out of the six matches. Playing No.1 singles, 19th-ranked Fodor defeated Elena Gantcheva, 7-6, 6-3. Fodor is now 4-1 for the season in the No.1 singles position. Teammate Suzi Babos, who is currently ranked No. 14, outlasted Nikol Dimitrova, 7-5, 6-3, playing No. 2 singles.
Ravelojaona, who garnered Pac-10 Player of the Week honors last week, defeated Sharon Marin, 7-5, 6-4, in the No. 3 singles position. Ravelojaona stays perfect on the singles court, as she improves to 5-0 for the season. Ilcinkas also notched a victory for the Bears, playing No. 5 singles and defeating Claire Smith, 6-3, 6-2. In the No. 6 spot, senior captain Jessica Shu outlasted Linda Tempelfelde, 6-2, 6-2. Ilcinkas and Shu defeated both of their opponents for the weekend.
