Cardinal Wins Fourth-Straight Against Nevada, 5-1

Phoenix, Ariz. - No. 7 Stanford (4-0) continued a streak of wins today with a 5-1 victory over Nevada (0-3). Freshman pitcher Missy Penna struck out 13 batters in seven innings in the circle, just three strikeouts shy of the school-record 16 held by Dana Sorensen.

Nevada scored the first run of the game as Tyler Schafer knocked a home run to right field in the bottom of the first inning. Stanford answered with two runs in the next inning. Sophomore Tricia Aggabao hit a two RBI triple, scoring Becky McCullough and Jackie Rinehart, who got on base with a double to right field. Stanford's Penna struck out three batters to close the second inning, 2-1.

Both teams went through four scoreless innings, with Penna striking out six more Wolfpack batters.

The Cardinal hitters came alive in the seventh inning, as Catalina Morris got on base with a bunt and later advanced on a double by Michelle Smith. Morris scored off of an outfield error. Senior Shoney Hixson entered the game as a pinch runner for Smith, and later scored off of double by Penna to left center. Rinehart was walked to first, and then later knocked home with an RBI single by McCullough to third base.

Penna collected two strikeouts in the bottom of the seventh to end the game, 5-1. Penna ended the game with 13 strikeouts, walking only two batters and allowing four hits and two runs. Aggabao was 2-2 at the plate with a triple and two RBI.

The Cardinal concludes the opening weekend tomorrow at 9:00 am versus No. 4 Texas at the Kajikawa Classic.
