Huskies Win Two At UNLV Alexis Resort Kickoff

LAS VEGAS-- The 13th-ranked Washington softball team picked-up wins over Illinois Chicago, 5-1, and Long Beach State, 5-2, Saturday at the UNLV Alexis Resort Kickoff to improve to 3-1 on the season. Sophomore Ashley Charters sparked UW's offense vs. UIC with three hits, while freshman pitcher Danielle Lawrie overpowered LBSU on the rubber with 13 strikeouts.

The Huskies conclude tournament play Sunday vs. UNLV at 1 pm.


Washington broke open a scoreless tie vs. Long Beach State with one run in the fourth frame. Charters led off with a bunt single and scored on a triple by Lauren Greer to right centerfield.

Long Beach State answered with two runs in the fifth inning on one hit and one error to take the 2-1 lead. Koutnee Gervasi led off with a double off the left field fence and Jonae Perez reached base on a UW fielding error. Both runners scored on separate wild pitches.

The Huskies came back with four runs on five hits in the sixth inning. Dominique Lastrapes and Charters led off with back-to-back singles and UW loaded the bases when Dena Tyson got on by an error. Sarah Hyatt reached on another Beach error to score Lastrapes and Charters scored the go-ahead run on a single by Greer. Nicole Moojen kept the rally going with an RBI-single to right field and a single by Alicia Matthews plated another to give UW the 5-2 lead and eventual win.

Lawrie (2-0) went the distance for the Huskies in the circle, holding LBSU to five hits, while striking out 13. Michelle Turner (1-1) took the loss for Long Beach State as she gave up five runs on eight hits with six strikeouts.

The Huskies pounded nine hits vs. Illinois-Chicago in the opener en route to the 5-1 victory. Charters led the UW offense with three hits, while freshman Marnie Koziol picked up two.

The Flames struck first, scoring one run in the fourth inning on two hits. Elizabeth Jacoby singled through the right side and stole second base. Nicole Robinson followed with a single to right field and Jacoby scored on a squeeze bunt by Nikki Rogers.

Washington answered in the fifth inning with a pair of runs to take the 2-1 lead. Matthews led off with a single up the middle and Koziol followed with a single to right field. Tyson moved the runners with a sacrifice bunt and Lastrapes hit a two-RBI double to centerfield to put the Huskies on top.

UW scored three more runs in the seventh frame on four hits. Koziol led off with an infield single and Jacki Hansen followed with a two-run home run that hit off the scoreboard. With two out, Charters kept the rally going, reaching base on a single up the middle. Tyson walked and Charters scored on a Hyatt single to left field.

Sophomore Caitlin Noble (1-1) earned the win for Washington as she held UIC to three hits, while striking out 11. Brittany McIntyre (0-1) took the loss for Illinois-Chicago as she gave up five hits in five innings with three strikeouts.
