Sun Devil Rolls on With Wins Over New Mexico and Cal State Northridge

Tempe, Ariz. - The ASU Softball Team kept their routine the same Saturday evening as they took two wins on the day from the New Mexico Lobos and the Cal State Northridge Matadors as the 2006 Kajikawa Classic rolled on.
After that the game and the Devils remained quiet, playing solid defense until the Lobos were able to get two hits off Ashley Werschky and tie the game 1-1 in the fourth.
The Devils rallied back though in the fifth with a lead-off single from Michelle Smith followed by a walk to Katie Cochran, after which both Devils were hit home on a huge double from pinch hitter Kristen Miller.
That was all the Devils needed on the day as the Lobos were only able to tack on one more run on the evening, giving the Devils their fourth win of the season with a 3-2 final score in the first full game of the season for the Devils.
In the second game of the evening, ASU looked to be back to their old ways as they took on the Cal State Northridge Matadors who they were able to put away in six innings in an 11-3 rout.
The game saw Mindy Cowles, Rhiannon Baca and Katie Cochran all hitting home runs in the game, where the Devils scored in the first, second and fifth inning, giving them six runs as they entered the sixth inning, where the Devils and their bats took control.
After lead-off singles from Jessica Mapes and Michelle Smith followed with a walk to Mindy Cowles leaving the bases open for the left-handed power hitter Katie Cochran, who came through yet again for the Devils with a single up the middle to drive home Mapes.
With the bases still loaded, junior Marisa Trevino stepped in to pinch hit and cranked a single to the left gap to drive in two runs.
After a stolen base from Cochran and Trevino and Kristen Miller driving in Cochran, the game was finished off with Bridgette Caron reaching on an error, brining home Trevino, to give the Devils of 11-3.
The Devils jump to 5-0 on the season and will look to grab two more wins tomorrow with an 11:30 game against Wisconsin followed with a 2 p.m. start against Utah St as the Kajikawa rolls on.
