V Means Victory Thanks To Vieira; USC Beats Florida International, 5-4
Feb. 11, 2006
LOS ANGELES --- Senior outfielder Darin Vieira (San Jose/Bellarmine Prep) lifted an RBI sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth Saturday as the USC Trojans rallied for the 5-4 victory against the Florida International Golden Panthers. USC scored a run in the eighth and ninth to register its third straight win.
USC is now 3-3 on the season while Florida International falls to 2-4 overall.
Vieira went 3-for-4 while sophomore first baseman Lucas Duda (Riverside/Arlington HS) also had three hits on the afternoon.
Shawn Olson (Orem, UT/College of Southern Nevada) earned his first win as a Trojan with 4 1/3 no-hit innings, striking out six and walking just one batter. He faced the minimum after Bryan Pullin walked and was thrown out at second during the next at-bat by catcher Johnny Bowden.
FIU took a 4-1 lead in the fifth after USC freshman starter Ryan Cook walked the first two batters. James McOwen hit a sacrifice fly to center and Olsen, who replaced Cook, was called for a balk when the bases were loaded. Olsen then struck out Yosvel Barroso to end the inning.
USC answered quickly in the bottom half when Blake Sharpe walked to lead off. He advanced to second on a single by Duda and scored when pinch hitter Kyle Degener singled to right. Duda scored when Vieira hit a ground ball to second, but Barroso's throw was wide and allowed the run to score.
Matt Cusick hit a ground ball in the eighth that scored Vieira from third to tie the game for the Trojans.
After Olsen retired the side in the ninth, Cyle Hankerd extended his opening-season hitting streak to six games with a single to left. Duda singled to second on a hard grounder and a sacrifice by Daniel Perales put runners at second and third. Pinch hitter Baron Frost was intentionally walked before Vieira hit a line drive fly ball that was caught, but allowed Hankerd to score the winning run.
The series concludes tomorrow at 1 p.m. and will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com.
