Houghting Wins Sixth Vault Title in Seven Tries

Los Angeles, Calif. - Ashley Houghting won at least a share of the vault title for the fifth-straight meet and for the sixth time in seven competitions to lead the Husky gymnastics team in Los Angeles on Sunday afternoon. Washington scored its second-highest team score of the season (193.200) on the heels of posting their season-low score on Friday at Utah State, but 11th-ranked UCLA won the meet with a 195.550.
UCLA was in top form early, setting team season-highs on vault and bars in the first two rotations. The Huskies remained close to the Bruins, tallying their second-highest score this season on bars (48.150) but were unable to overcome the five-time NCAA champions.
Houghting (Welland, Ont./Northview Heights Secondary) scored a 9.900 to tie UCLA's Kristina Comforte and Jordan Schwikert for first-place on vault and earn the Huskies' lone top individual honor during the afternoon. No UCLA gymnast scored below a 9.800 on vault and UCLA tallied a 49.275. Kristen Omori (Kirkland, Wash./Juanita HS) and Emily Epsten (San Diego, Calif./Francis Parker HS) were the Huskies next highest scorers and tied for seventh with 9.800.
UCLA swept the top-three individual spots on bars, led by Kate Richardson's 9.925. UCLA's lowest score was a 9.750 and the team totaled 49.300. Kelly McDonald (Seattle/Roosevelt HS) tied for fourth with a 9.825. UW's Chelsea Bakken (Mesa, Ariz./Mountain View HS) scored a 9.750 to tie for sixth and Darcee Schiller (Abbottsford, B.C./Bateman Secondary) was ninth after scoring a career-best 9.725.
Washington was on floor for its third rotation and the Huskies were forced to count a fall toward their team total of 47.525. UCLA scored a 48.975, led by Jordan Schwikert's 9.900. Omori was the Huskies top scorer, posting a 9.750 to finish fifth.
Washington scored its second-highest team total this season with a 48.725 on beam in the final rotation. UCLA scored a season low 48.000 to hand the Huskies their lone team event win. UCLA's Melissa Chan won floor with a 9.925, but McDonald was second with a 9.825, followed by Omori and Kelly Gilbert (Phoenix, Ariz./Mountain View HS), who tied for third with 9.800.
UCLA's Ariana Berlin won all-around with a 39.200 and Comforte was second with 38.900. Bakken was third with a 38.550.
The Huskies return to the mat on Friday, February 17 at 7:00 p.m. at Bank of America Arena against the California Golden Bears.
