Huskies Win UNLV Alexis Resort Kickoff Classic

LAS VEGAS-- The 13th-ranked Washington softball team (4-1) handed UNLV a 3-1 loss Sunday to clinch the UNLV Alexis Resort Kickoff Classic. The Huskies finished the tournament tied with Oklahoma with a 4-1 record but Washington won the tiebreaker with a 12-4 victory over the Sooners on Friday.

Freshman Ashlyn Watson gave Washington the early lead with a leadoff home run in the second inning. It marked Watson's second home run in as many days.

Washington tacked on two more runs in the third frame on four hits. Freshman Marnie Koziol led off with an infield single and junior Dominique Lastrapes followed with a double to right field. Senior Sarah Hyatt and freshman Alicia Matthews followed with back-to-back RBI-singles to put Washington on top 3-0.

The Rebels got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning to cut Washington's lead to 3-1. Brittany Frieght singled up the middle and scored on a single by Marissa Nichols and a two-base error by the right fielder.

UW hurler Danielle Lawrie (3-0) earned the win as she allowed just two hits and struck out 11 batters. Kelley Griego (0-2) took the loss for UNLV as she gave up three runs in 3.1 innings.

The Huskies return to action next week when they play at the LSU Tiger Classic in Baton Rouge, La. Washington opens the tournament on Feb. 17 at 11 am.
