Stanford Falls at No. 12 Arizona State

Tempe, Ariz. - Stanford lost at Arizona State, 30-15, this afternoon at Wells Fargo Arena. The Cardinal (7-7) closed out the Pac-10 season with a 4-4 mark in league competition, while Arizona State finished the regular season with a 14-7 overall record and a perfect 8-0 mark in Pac-10 competition.
After ASU forfeited to Stanford's tenth-ranked Tanner Gardner at 125 pounds, the Sun Devils tied the meet with a quick pin at 133 pounds and took a 12-6 lead with their second pin at 141 pounds
At 149 pounds, it was a match-up between Pat Payne, ranked third in the conference and Stanford's Josh Zupancic, ranked fifth in the Pac-10. On Friday, Zupancic upset the second-ranked wrestler in the league with an 8-7 decision over Cal Poly's Jeff Owens (No. 20 nationally). Zupancic secured the riding time point against Payne to send today's bout into overtime. In the first sudden victory minute, neither wrestler scored, but in the first 30 second period, Zupancic escaped for the 6-5 lead, but Payne was awarded a penalty point for stalling. In the second sudden victory, Zupancic scored a takedown for the 8-6 victory.
At 157, ninth-ranked Brian Stith scored an 8-2 decision to help the Sun Devils take a 15-9 lead, but after a 10-minute intermission Stanford fifth year senior Ray Blake, ranked No. 16 in the nation, took to the mat against 11th-ranked Pat Pitsch. After a scoreless first period, Pitsch took the 1-0 lead in the second with an escape after Blake built up 41 seconds of riding time. In the third period, Blake started down and notched a reversal and quick two-point nearfall for the 4-1 lead. Pitsch scored a reversal of his own at the end of the period, but Blake took the 4-3 decision.
At 174 pounds, Luke Feist tied the meet at 15-15 with a 4-0 decision over ASU's Alex Pavlenko, scoring a reversal in the second and a takedown in the third. But, the Sun Devils have three top-10 wrestlers at the last three weights and scored a decision at 184, and falls at 197 and heavyweight.
The Cardinal will be on the road for its final dual of the season against Fresno State on Wednesday, before hosting the Pac-10 Championships
