Arizona State's CJ Nuess Named Pac-10 Men's Swimmer of the Month

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - ARIZONA STATE's CJ Nuess has been named Pac-10 Men's Swimmer of the Month for January, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.

Nuess, a sophomore from Medical Lake, Wash., swam in six events in a dual meet vs. Purdue, winning the 200-yard IM in 1:51.00 and the 400-yard IM in 3:54.30. The sophomore earned second-place finishes in the 200-yard backstroke (1:52.17), the 200-yard butterfly (1:50.88), and the 1,000-yard freestyle (9:16.42). He also placed fourth in the 200-yard breaststroke, finishing in 2:04.18 against the Boilermakers.

The following weekend, Nuess captured two of the Sun Devils' seven first-place finishes against Minnesota. Nuess won 400-yard IM in 3:53.24, and recorded the fastest time of the season in the 1,000-yard freestyle (9:13.49). He finished third in the 200-yard backstroke, touching in 1:51.33, the team's fastest time of the season in the event.

On Jan. 20, Nuess placed in three events at California, earning second-place in both the 200-yard backstroke (1:52.87) and the 200-yard IM (1:50.86), as well as finishing fourth in the 200-yard butterfly (1:49.83). The No. 23 Sun Devils traveled to Stanford the next day, where Nuess recorded a lifetime best and the team's team's fastest time this season in the 1,650-yard freestyle. He touched the wall in 15:14.68 to take first place. Three minutes after setting the record, Nuess finished fourth in the 200-yard IM (1.51.05). He also placed third in the 200-yard breastroke (2:05.25) against the Cardinal.

This is the first monthly honor for Nuess and Arizona State's second Swimmer of the Month honor all-time.
