WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - California senior men's tennis player Conor Niland has been named the Pac-10 Men's Tennis Player of the Week for Feb. 6 - 12, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.

Niland, a senior from Limerick, Ireland, won his fifth straight match at the No. 1 singles position, defeating Fresno State's Jakub Cech in two sets, 6-1, 6-2 on Saturday. Niland's 5-0 record in the first position marks his best season-opening record. Two weeks ago, Niland recorded an upset victory over UCLA's third-ranked Benjamin Kohlloeffel, 6-3, 6-2.

In doubles action, Niland paired with junior Tyler Browne at No. 1 doubles to defeat Sam Gibbs and Sergiu Modoc, 8-4.

The award is Niland's first Pac-10 Player of the Week honor.

With their 7-0 sweep over the Fresno State, the Bears improved their record to 4-1 overall. The Bears will travel across the Bay to face rival Stanford on Saturday. The match is slated for a 1 p.m. (PST) start.
