No. 12 ASU Gymnasts Travel To No. 9 UCLA

The No. 12 ranked Arizona State University's gymnastics team looks to get back on the winning track with a road meet at No. 9 UCLA, on Sunday, Febuary 19 at 2:00 p.m. PT at Pauley Pavilion. The Sun Devils, under 26th-year head coach John Spini, are in a new era of Sun Devil gymnastics with the $2 million John Spini Gymnastics Training Facility on the ASU campus. It is the first time in five years that the squad has trained on campus. Spini looks to lead the Sun Devils to an NCAA regional berth for the eighth time in the last 10 seasons. Spini is currently ASU's longest-tenured head coach, and is tied for second on the all-time Sun Devil head coaching list with long-time track and field mentor Senon 'Baldy' Castillo. Former Sun Devil women's tennis coaching legend Anne Pittman holds the distinction as the longesttenured ASU head coach in school history at 31 seasons. With a 196.325-195.725 loss to No. 12 Stanford last Friday, his regular-season record is now 310-124-2 over 25-plus seasons. His won-loss mark at home is 164-27-1.
ASU In The Rankings --
ASU debuted at No. 14 in the GymInfo rankings, based on the preseason coaches poll released in December. ASU fell two spots to No. 12 in this week's rankings, which are based upon total season average score. Pac-10 Conference foe UCLA was selected third in the preseason poll with 579 votes and three first-place bids. ASU received 293 votes and was neighbored in the standings by No. 9 Stanford (417), No. 13 Oregon State (331), No. 17 Arizona (188) and No. 18 Washington (185). ASU Faces Nation's Finest --
Arizona State will face eight of the nation's Top 25 teams in 2006, according to the preseason coaches poll. Of the squads the Sun Devils meet in `06, Utah was No. 2, UCLA No. 3, Stanford No. 9, Iowa State No. 11, Oregon State No. 13, Arizona No. 17, Washington No. 18 and DenverNo. 21 in the preseason coaches poll. Five of those meetings are at home in Wells Fargo Arena.
ASU In The Rankings/Individual & Team Events --
Junior Cassandra Jusino is ranked first nationally in the all-around (39.475) while senior Ashley Kelly is 10th (39.170). Kelly ranks 1st (9.890) on the balance beam while Jusino is a close second (9.875). Kelly also ranks 15th on vault (9.855) while Jusino is 10th on the floor exercise(9.844). ASU is ranked 12th nationally as a team and third on the balance beam (48.855). The Sun Devils are ranked 14th on floor exercise (48.695), 15th on the uneven parallel bars (48.615) and 7th on vault (49.085).
ASU Versus UCLA --
Arizona State University trails the all-time series with UCLA, 30-52. The Sun Devils trail in regular-season meets (16-20) and in postseason competition (14-35). ASU is 11-7 at home versus the Bruins in Wells Fargo Arena, 4-12 in Los Angeles and 1-1 at neutral sites. The Sun Devils lost to the Bruins in Tempe last year, 194.275-193.4, in a dual meet and in the Pac-10 Conference Championships.
