Cal Baseball Falls at UC Davis, 13-9

Feb. 14, 2006

DAVIS, CALIF. - California tallied three runs in the first inning, exploded for four runs in the eighth inning and added two runs in the ninth, but it was not enough offense as the Golden Bears (3-5) fell, 13-9, Tuesday at UC Davis' (4-2) Dobbins Stadium. Despite the loss, sophomore second baseman Josh Satin had an impressive day at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two doubles, and home run and a career-high seven RBI.

Cal started off well as it scored three times in the top of the first inning off of Aggie starter Jeremy McChesney (1-0, five hits, three runs, one earned run), highlighted by Satin's two-run double and an RBI double by sophomore first baseman Mike Van Winden.

However, the Bears' freshman left-hander, Craig Bennigson (0-1, 1.3 innings, seven hits, seven runs, one walk, one strikeout), struggled, giving up three runs in the bottom of the first and four runs in the bottom of the second. Meanwhile, McChesney recovered to retire 11-straight Bears between the second and fifth innings.

Cal did not give up, though. After UC Davis had added a run in the third and a run in the seventh, the Bears got back into the game with four runs in the top of the eighth after some solid relief pitching from senior right-hander Alec Harris (3.7 innings, three hits, one run, two walks, four strikeouts). Senior shortstop Allen Craig led off the eighth with a single, Van Winden walked and Satin powered a three-run homer to left. Then, with one out in the inning, junior left fielder Chris Errecart hit a solo homer to left to get Cal within, 9-7. Errecart has now hit a home run in three of the last four games.

Unfortunately for the Bears, the Aggies again jumped out to a big lead on Jeremy Geotz's RBI single and Michael Hernandez's three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth. Cal mounted a small threat in the top of the ninth on Satin's two-run double to right-center field, but UC Davis' Nik Aurora (1.7 innings, two hits, two runs, one walk, four strikeouts) was able to get the final outs to earn his first save of the year.

Besides Satin, Craig (2-for-4) and junior third baseman Stephen Carlson (2-for-4) also had multiple hits for the Bears.

Cal will next travel to Waco, Texas for a three-game series versus No. 24-ranked Baylor, beginning Friday, Feb. 17 at 6 p.m at Baylor Ballpark.

Home Runs:

Cal: Satin, three-run homer in the eighth inning. Errecart, solo home run in the eighth inning.

UC Davis: Hernandez, three-run homer in the eighth inning.
