Men's Tennis Edges San Diego State, 4-3
Feb. 14, 2006
LOS ANGELES - Coming off back-to-back losses for the first time in more than a year, the seventh-ranked UCLA men's tennis team (5-2) got back in the win column Tuesday, registering a 4-3 victory over San Diego State (3-2) at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. Tuesday's win serves as a warm-up for one of the biggest competitions of the year, as the Bruins head to the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships beginning this Friday in Seattle, Wash.
UCLA jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the match when the Bruins' No. 1 duo of Philipp Gruendler and Benjamin Kohlloeffel clinched the doubles point with an 8-4 win over Markus Dickhardt/Benedikt Stronk. That win was preceded by Haythem Abid and Chris Surapol cruising to an 8-1 victory in their match at the No. 2 position.
UCLA freshman Michael Look, who did not play doubles, came out fresh in singles play, as he was the first to finish, quickly downing 85th-ranked Robert Sabo, 6-1, 6-1 at court No. 6. The Bruins took a 3-0 lead in the match not long after, as Surapol posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Anthony Gomez at court No. 4.
Although the Aztecs got on the board when Dickhardt upset 75th-ranked Mathieu Dehaine in straight sets at court No. 3, Kohlloeffel ended up clinching the win for UCLA at the No. 1 position, defeating Stronk, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2.
With the Bruins up 4-1 and the dual already decided, SDSU claimed the final two matches of the day, as Christian Groh and Stephan Timu won at court Nos. 2 and 5 respectively.
UCLA faces No. 10 LSU in the opening round of the USTA/ITA National Team Indoors this Friday at 2:30 p.m.
