Cardinal Takes Santa Clara, 13-1, At The Stanford Invitational

Stanford, Calif. - Stanford topped Santa Clara, 13-1, in rainy conditions during the first day of the Stanford Invitational I. Senior outfielder Catalina Morris led the hitting campaign with a triple in both the third and fourth innings, knocking in two runners. Sophomore second baseman Tricia Aggabao and sophomore catcher Erin Howe also collected multiple RBI hits.
Freshman Maddy Coon hit a double to right field to get the Cardinal hitting started in the first inning, advancing Lauren Lappin who got on base with a walk. Sophomore first baseman Michelle Smith slammed a double to left center, scoring Lappin and Coon and putting Stanford up, 2-0. The Bronco's Jenny Brown hit a double to left field and later scored on a wild pitch.
Lappin hit a single to short stop in the second inning, scoring Morris who got on base with a triple up the middle.
The Cardinal increased its lead by four runs in the third inning. Howe doubled to left center, scoring freshman Missy Penna. Junior right fielder Anna Beardman singled to left field, scoring Jackie Rinehart, who reached on a fielder's choice. Morris knocked a triple to center field, bringing home Howe and Beardman. Stanford ended the top of the third up, 7-0.
In the fourth inning, Smith got on base with a single to left field and advanced to third on two wild pitches. Sophomore second baseman Tricia Aggabao slammed a triple down the right field line, scoring Smith, Rinehart and Howe.
Stanford closed the game with three more runs in the fifth inning. Senior Shoney Hixson and Coon were both walked to first, followed by Smith who reached on an error. Penna collected an RBI with a ground ball to second, scoring Hixson. Howe hit a two RBI single to score Coon and Smith.
Senior Laura Severson came in to pitch for sophomore Becky McCullough in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Broncos grounded out one batter to shortstop and Severson struck out two more to end the game. In four innings, McCullough allowed only two hits and one run.
Howe was 2-3 at the plate with three RBI and Smith was 2-3 with two RBI. Morris was also 2-3 with two RBI.
The Cardinal will return to the field tomorrow at 1:30 pm against the Drake Bulldogs.
