SEATTLE - No. 12 seed Washington pulled a 4-1 first round upset over No. 6 seed Virginia, to advance to the quarterfinals of the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships at the Nordstrom Tennis Center, Friday evening. Husky junior Daniel Chu clinched the match for the host Huskies with a three-set win at No. 5 singles.

Washington (7-0) will face No. 3 seed Illinois Saturday at 5:30 p.m. at the Nordstrom Tennis Center. Also playing in tomorrow's quarterfinals will be No. 4 Pepperdine vs. No. 5 Mississippi (8 a.m.), No. 1 Florida vs. No. 9 Duke (11 a.m.) and No. 2 Georgia vs. No. 7 UCLA (2:30 p.m.).

The Huskies jumped out to a 3-0 lead, winning the doubles point and getting singles wins from Klaus Jank and Jean-Noel Insausti, but the remaining four matches went to third sets. That set the stage for Chu's 6-7 (4), 6-2, 6-4 clinching win at No. 5 over Marko Miklo. Virginia's (7-4) lone point came from Rylan Rizza over UW's Andy Kuharszky at No. 4 singles.

In addition to the team upset, the Huskies used individual upsets to earn the victory. In doubles, Chu and Alex Slovic, ranked 45th, defeated 35th-ranked Treat Huey and Somdev Devvarman at No. 1, while unranked Insausti and Mike Ricks defeated the 25th-ranked pair of Darrin Cohen and Doug Stewart. Insausti also downed No. 6 Huey at No. 3 singles.

'I felt good about the fact that we have a lot of new guys and we were able to beat a top team that is also experienced,' UW head coach Matt Anger said. 'At this point in the year our team might not have the same experience that they do, and we were able to overcome that. It was a good win and our guys should feel good about it.'

Virginia beat Washington in last year's NCAA Round of 16, 4-0.

Washington has now registered an opening round upset in three of the four times it has hosted the USTA/ITA National Team Indoors Championships. The Huskies are 0-2 in its two previous quarterfinal showings.
