No. 6 Cal Bounces Back to Beat Illinois, 6-4

Feb. 17, 2006

LAS VEGAS - Sixth-ranked California (5-1) rebounded from its first loss of the season by beating Illinois, 6-4, on Friday night at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic hosted by UNLV. Illinois fell to 2-4.

The Golden Bears had lost to Cal State Fullerton,1-0, on Friday afternoon in their first game of the Rebels' tournament. They fell behind 4-0 to Illinois in the top half of the first inning when pitcher Kacey Coonce hit a grand slam off of Cal starter Lauren Frankiewicz. But two home runs by catcher Haley Woods and solo shots by shortstop Carly Winger and third baseman Katie Vickers put Cal back on top of Illini in the Bears' nightcap.

Cal started its comeback in the bottom of the first. Left fielder Lindsay James hit a one-out single, and Woods followed with a two-run blast for her second homer of the season to make the score 4-2. Winger led off the bottom of the second with her second homer of the season to reduce Illinois' lead to 4-3. Cal came all the way back with two outs in the bottom of the third, when Woods and Vickers hit back-to-back two-out homers to give Cal the lead, 5-4.

With two out in the bottom of the sixth, Cal pinch hitter Jeana Gevas singled in pinch runner Jessica Moore to give the Bears their winning 6-4 score line.

The Bears play two games on Saturday at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic. They take on 14th-ranked Northwestern at 6 p.m. before facing Wright State at 8:15 p.m.
