No. 6 Cal Falls to Cal State Fullerton, 1-0

Feb. 17, 2006

LAS VEGAS - Sixth-ranked California (4-1) suffered its first loss of the season to Cal State Fullerton, 1-0, in seven innings on Friday afternoon at Eller Media Stadium at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic hosted by UNLV.

Cal senior Kristina Thorson struck out four and allowed just four hits. She gave up the game's lone run when Fullerton junior designated player Tiffany Hoff hit her first home run of the season to lead off the bottom of the seventh.

The Golden Bears couldn't break through against Titans pitcher Candice Baker, who had eight strikeouts and scattered five hits over seven innings of work. Cal second baseman Emily Friedman and catcher Haley Woods had two hits apiece, but the Bears combined to strand seven baserunners. Hoff, like Friedman and Woods, hit 2-for-3 in the game.

The Bears play Illinois tonight at 8:15 p.m. at the UNLV tournament.
