Bruins Fall to No. 2 Georgia, 4-3 at Team Indoors
Feb. 18, 2006
Seattle, Wash. - The seventh-ranked UCLA men's tennis team came up just short in its bid to advance to the semifinals at the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships on Saturday, dropping a hard-fought 4-3 decision to No. 2 Georgia at the University of Washington's Nordstrom Tennis Center. The Bruins (6-3) now move into the consolation bracket and will meet the loser of No. 3 Illinois and No. 12 Washington on Sunday at 5:30 p.m.
With the score tied at 3-3, Saturday's match was eventually decided at the No. 4 singles position, where Georgia's 12th-ranked Strahinja Bobusic outlasted Bruin junior Chris Surapol, 4-6, 7-5, 6-0. The loss marked Surapol's first in a dual match this season, as he entered the day with a 7-0 record.
Prior to Bobusic's victory, the Bruins had mounted a strong comeback after being down 3-1. Third-ranked Benjamin Kohlloeffel cut the lead to 3-2 with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Luis Flores at court No. 1. Bruin sophomore Mathieu Dehaine, who was down two match points in the second set of his match with Antonio Ruiz at court No. 3, eventually came back to win 3-6, 7-6(2), 6-3.
The other UCLA singles victory on the day came at court No. 6, where freshman Michael Look was a 6-4, 6-3 winner over Colin Purcell.
With both teams splitting the singles play, Saturday's match was ultimately decided by the strong doubles play of the Bulldogs (6-0). Georgia took victories on court Nos. 2 and 3 to seal up the point. Court No. 1 was suspended with UCLA's Philipp Gruendler and Kohlloeffel up 6-4 over Georgia's John Isner/Ruiz.
