Feb. 18, 2006
Stockton, Calif. - The UCLA baseball team posted a 5-1 win over Pacific in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday night at Stockton Ballpark. The win puts UCLA at 4-5 on the season, while the Tigers fall to 6-3 on the season.
Junior LHP Dave Huff threw a gem for the Bruins, going 8.0 innings with a season-high 15 strikeouts, allowing just one run on two hits. Huff opened the game in impressive fashion by striking out the first nine batters he faced in a row.
Freshman Jermaine Curtis led the way for the Bruins at the plate with a 2-for-3 performance with two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI. Junior Hector Ambriz went 2-for-4 with a run scored, and senior Anthony Norman went 2-for-4 with a RBI.
UCLA got on the board in the second inning after back-to-back walks to Ambriz and senior Brett McMillan put runners at first and second. With one out, Curtis roped a line drive off the left field wall to score Ambriz from second and put the Bruins up 1-0.
The Bruins posted two more runs in the fourth inning to go up 3-0. Senior Sean Smith singled to open the inning, followed by a double down the left field line by Curtis which allowed Smith to score on a fielding error by Pacific left fielder Jake Ross. Freshman Brandon Crawford laced a two-out double down the right field line to score Curtis from second.
Pacific would knock Huff from perfection in the fourth inning on a one-out single to left field by Ross. With two outs, Pacific center fielder Matt Berezay hit a routine fly ball to left field but the ball was lost in between the falling rain and the lights and dropped fair, resulting in an RBI double for Berezay which cut the Bruins' lead to 3-1.
The game weathered a 25 minute rain delay in the top of the fifth inning.
The Bruins extended their lead to 4-1 in the sixth inning. Curtis was hit by a pitch to start off the inning and was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Ryan Babineau. Norman followed with a RBI single through the left side to score Curtis from second. Senior Chris Jensen added a solo home run in the seventh inning to put the Bruins up 5-1.
