Feb. 19, 2006
LOS ANGELES --- Kyle Murphy's RBI sacrifice fly in the top of the 11th proved to be the game-winner Sunday as the Kansas Jayhawks defeated the Vanderbilt Commodores, 5-2, in day three action at the 2006 Public Storage Baseball Classic. Reliever Don Czyz threw 5 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits for the Jayhawks.
Kansas (7-4) earned its first win in the tournament after being down 2-0 in the eighth. Murphy led off the innings for KU with a double to left. Matt Baty walked and both runners advanced on a sacrifice by Ritchie Price. Jared Schweitzer lifted a fly ball to left, plating Murphy. Gus Milner was then hit by a pitch and reliever Nick Christiani then walked Justin Ellrich with the bases loaded to tie the game at two apiece.
Ty Davis took the loss after allowing three runs on five hits in 3 1/3 innings in relief. Vanderbilt starter Cody Crowell lasted seven innings, giving up two runs on four hits.
Czyz had a key sequence in the Vanderbilt ninth when the Commodores (1-2) had runners at first and second with one out. Ryan Flaherty hit a ground ball back to Czyz, who started the 1-6-3 double play to send the game into extra innings.
Schweitzer finished the day with a 3-for-5 performance and two RBI.
