Stanford Blanks Sacramento State, 7-0

Stanford, Calif. - Stanford scored seven runs in the first two innings to shut out the Sacramento State Hornets, 7-0. Sophomore third baseman Michelle Smith was 2-4 at the plate with two runs and two RBI. In six innings, freshman pitcher Missy Penna struck out five batters, gave up one hit and walked only one batter.

Smith put Stanford on the board in the first inning with an RBI single, scoring Lauren Lappin who reached on a walk. Freshman Maddy Coon and Smith both scored from third on walks and the Cardinal ended the inning ahead, 3-0.

In the bottom of the second, both Lappin and senior Catalina Morris got on base with a single. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch and Coon was walked to load the bases. Smith stepped up and hit a single to left field, scoring Morris. Howe was also walked and Lappin scored. Penna hit a single up the middle to bring Coon home and Smith scored on a sacrifice fly by junior Jackie Rinehart. Stanford closed out the inning up, 7-0, and remained there for the rest of the game.

Penna struck out five batters from the third inning on, allowing only one hit and walking only one batter. Sophomore Lauren Nydam pitched the seventh inning for Stanford, allowing two hits. Smith ended the day 2-4 at the plate with two runs and two RBI and Penna was 2-3 with two RBI.

Stanford will play one more game versus Santa Clara in the Stanford Invitational I, slated for 1:30 pm.
