No. 15 Cal in Second After First Round of Wildcat Invitational
Feb. 20, 2006
TUCSON, Ariz. - No. 15 California was in second place - only one shot behind No. 1 Duke - after the first round of the Arizona Wildcat Invitational Monday at Arizona National Golf Course. The Golden Bears are in fourth place with three holes to play in the second round, which will be continued Tuesday morning before teams begin the final round.
The 17 teams have between three to five holes left in the second round. No. 8 Arizona State holds the lead at five-under overall, and No. 13 UNLV is second at two-under, while No. 1 Duke is third at one-under. Cal is at one-over heading into Tuesday.
Duke carded a three-under 281 in the opening round but had to make up some ground down the stretch. Cal held the top spot for awhile at five-under before dropping back to second at 282, which matches the school record for a team score in a round. The previous record, which was set at the 2004 NCAA Championships, was on a par-72 course (six-under 282), however.
Rounding out the top five after the first round of play was No. 5 USC (285), Arizona State (286) and No. 6 Auburn, No. 2 UCLA and UNLV were in fifth at 288.
USC's Irene Cho, Duke's Anna Grzebien and Arizona State's Jennifer Osborn led the field after the first round at three-under 68. Cal senior Sophia Sheridan was among five golfers who were tied for fourth at 69. Sheridan birdied holes 14-17 and hole No. 5 in the first round and holds a two-shot lead over Osborn for first place, as golfers conclude the second round tomorrow. Sheridan is at seven-under overall, courtesy of seven second-round birdies, with holes six and seven remaining in the second round. She is on pace to tie the school records for 18 (-5) and 36 holes (-7).
Cal junior Mika Takayama and freshman Allison Goodman were tied for ninth after the first round with career bests for both athletes of one-under 70. Senior Sofie Andersson and freshman Shannon Yocum were tied for 35th at 73.
Play resumes at 8 a.m. MT Tuesday.
