Final Stats

Los Angeles - Junior left-hander Brian Schroeder limited No. 9 Pepperdine to four hits over six innings and received relief help from Josh Ronenicke and Brant Rustich to help UCLA register a 2-0 victory over the Waves Tuesday night at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

The loss dropped Pepperdine to 6-5 on the season while the Bruins improved to 5-6.

Junior right hander Robert Della Grotta (0-2) started for the Waves and was a tough-luck loser after working four innings, allowing three hits, an unearned run, walking two and striking out one.

The Bruins' lone run off Della Grotta came in the second inning when designated hitter Hector Ambriz opened the inning with a single to center field and eventually scored from third base on a bases loaded double play.

UCLA had loaded the bases on Ambriz' double, a hit batsman and an error.

Pepperdine's best scoring chance came in the seventh inning when it loaded the base with two outs. However, Roenicke, pitching in relief of Schroeder, struck out Luke Salas to end the inning and preserve the 1-0 lead.

The Bruins added an insurance run in the seventh inning on a two-out single through the right side by shortstop Brandon Crawford that scored second baseman Sean Smith, who doubled down the left field line with two outs.

The Waves had scoring chances throughout the game as they put the leadoff batter on base in six of the nine innings, but were unable to produce the big hit as they left nine runners on base, including seven in scoring position.

Pepperdine returns to action on Friday when it opens a three-game series against No. 8 Tulane in New Orleans beginning at 4 p.m. (PST).
