Final Stats

Los Angeles - The UCLA baseball team used some timely hitting and clutch pitching to earn a 2-0 win over No. 9 Pepperdine on Tuesday night at Jackie Robinson Stadium. The win, the Bruins' first shutout victory of the season, improves UCLA to 5-6, while the Waves drop to 6-5.

Freshman Brandon Crawford led the Bruins with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate with a RBI single and a stolen base. Junior Hector Ambriz went 1-for-2 with a run scored, and senior Anthony Norman chipped in with two hits.

The Bruins got on the board in the second inning as Ambriz led off with a single up the middle. Junior Tim Stewart was the next batter and was hit by a pitch, and freshman Jermaine Curtis reached on a throwing error by the third baseman on a sacrifice bunt to load the bases. Senior Josh Roenicke hit into a 6-4-3 double play to allow Ambriz to score from third and put the Bruins up 1-0.

UCLA loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning with three-consecutive walks to Ambriz, Stewart, and Curtis. Roenicke then hit into a 4-6-3 double play to end the threat for the Bruins.

Pepperdine had an opportunity to score in the top of the seventh inning. Pepperdine's Danny Worth singled to open the inning, and a one-out single by Chase d'Arnaud put runners at first and second for the Waves. A two-out walk to David Uribe loaded the bases. Roenicke, who came in from center field to relieve starter Brian Schroeder, fell behind in the count 2-0 to Luke Salas, but rallied to strike him out looking on three-straight pitches to keep the Waves scoreless through seven innings.

The Bruins added another run in the bottom of the seventh inning to go up 2-0. Senior Sean Smith hit a two-out double down the left field line to give UCLA a runner in scoring position. Crawford followed with a single through the right side to score Smith from second and give UCLA all the runs it would need.

Schroeder (1-0) earned his first victory of the year throwing 6.0 innings, allowing no runs on four hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Roenicke pitched 2.0 innings of solid relief work with three strikeouts, and junior Brant Rustich pitched a scoreless ninth with two strikeouts to earn his second save of the season.

The Bruins will next host an exhibition game against Waseda University on Thursday, Feb. 23 (6 p.m.). The Bruins will then host the No. 14 Cal State Fullerton Titans on Friday, Feb. 24 (6 p.m.), before playing at Cal State Fullerton on Saturday (6 p.m.) and Sunday (1 p.m.).
