Husky Gymnasts Head To Stanford
Feb. 23, 2006
The Meet: The 30th-ranked Washington gymnastics team (4-10 overall, 2-7 Pac-10) hit the road to face the 12th-ranked Stanford Cardinal (9-2, 3-1) for a dual meet on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Burnham Pavilion. All Stanford meets are broadcast live on www.gostanford.com. The video coverage will focus primarily on Stanford gymnasts.
Series History: The Huskies are 36-29 all-time against the Stanford Cardinal. Washington and Stanford met three times last year, with the Huskies finishing ahead of the Cardinal in two of those meets. In the most recent meeting, the 2005 NCAA West Regionals, the Huskies finished third (195.000) while Stanford was fourth (194.750). The Huskies have not won a dual meet at Stanford since Jan. 16, 1999 when the Huskies beat the Cardinal 191.525-190.700.
Last Week: UW won its first dual meet of the season, downing California 189.875-189.275. The Huskies held a comfortable 144.700-142.300 lead after three rotations, earning a season-high on bars (48.350), but were forced to use just five competitors on floor due to a late injury to Ashley Houghting and Chelsea Bakken being unavailable due to a knee injury. Freshman Katie Boyko stepped into the floor lineup completely unprepared to compete and saved the day for the Huskies by scoring a 7.400 on floor. The Huskies won individual titles on vault (Houghting, 9.875), bars (Kelly McDonald, 9.825), beam (McDonald, 9.825) and floor (Kristen Omori, 9.800).
Scouting the Cardinal: The 12th-ranked Cardinal will be honoring their three seniors on Friday: Natalie Foley, Jessica Louie, and Glyn Sweets. The Cardinal are the second-highest ranked Pac-10 team with a 195.135 average. Liz Tricase is the national leader with a 9.9 average on bars and scored a 10 last week against Arizona. Tricase is also 16th nationally on vault. Sophomore Tabitha Yim is Stanford's top All-Arounder and scored a career-best 39.625 last week. Yim is ranked first in the Pac-10 on floor and sixth nationally with a 9.865 average. Freshman Nicole Ourada is 18th in the nation in the All-Around (38.995).
