Nine Cal Swimmers in Finals at Pac-10 Championships

LONG BEACH, Calif. - The No. 3 California swimming team qualified nine individuals for Thursday night's finals on the second day of the 2006 Pac-10 Championships at Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool.

The Bears have five swimmers in an individual A final, one in a B final and three in a C final. Those in the A final finished between first and eighth places in the prelims. Those in ninth through 16th places are in the B final, and the 17th through 24th finishers in the prelims are in the C final.

Senior Ashley Chandler posted the top time in the prelims of the 500-yard freestyle at 4:44.73. Junior Erin Reilly clocked the third-fastest time of 4:47.24.

In the 200 IM, senior Helen Silver and freshman Jessica Hardy qualified for the A final. Silver finished sixth (2:01.93), and Hardy came in seventh (2:02.21) in the prelims.

Sophomore Emily Silver was the only qualifier for the A final of the 50 free, clocking a 23.05 (5th) in the prelims. Junior Annie Babicz will swim in the C final of the 50 free after placing 17th in 23.55.

Rachel Ridgeway qualified for the B final of the 200 IM with a time of 2:02.94 (12th). Genevieve Patterson (19th, 2:05.57) and Lauren Rogers (21st, 2:06.10) will swim in the C final of the 200 IM.

Finals for the 500 free, 200 IM and 50 free will take place Thursday night beginning at 6 p.m. The final for the 200 free relay is also tonight.
