Bruin Golfers Play in Two Tournaments Next Week

Feb. 24, 2006

The fifth-ranked UCLA men's golf program prepares to compete in separate tournaments next week on the same date.

The Gold Team will participate in the 29th Annual Ashworth Invitational, hosted by USC at North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village.

The Blue Team, winner of two straight events, travels to Bakersfield for the Family Motors Invitational.

Both tournaments are scheduled for Feb. 27-28.

The Gold Team, which won the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate three weeks ago, features junior Chris Heintz, sophomores Kevin Chappell and Daniel Im and freshmen Erik Flores and James Lee.

The Blue Team is comprised of junior Peter Campbell, sophomores Brandon Christianson, Craig Leslie and Matt Marshall and freshman Lucas Lee.

Together, the teams have won six tournaments in nine appearances, including three straight in February. In addition, Leslie and Lucas Lee have won medalist honors the last two weeks.

'Both squads are competing well,' said Head Coach O.D. Vincent. 'There is plenty of competition among everyone on the roster. This type of competition can only make everyone a better player and improve the team's overall chances to win a championship.'

Thru Feb. 24, Flores was ranked 10th nationally, the highest ranking of any Pac-10 player. He leads the team with a 71.5 scoring average and four Top 10 finishes. In his last three events, he has finished no worse than a tie for third.

Kevin Chappell, on the strength of his tie for sixth at the Mercedes event, is ranked 29th. He has recorded two Top 10s, two rounds under par and a scoring average of 74.1 in 12 rounds.

Sophomore Daniel Im ranks 45th in the nation. He is tied with Leslie in scoring average at 72.9 and Top 10 finishes with three.

Freshman Lucas Lee ranks 71st in the country and boasts a scoring average of 72.0 following his victory at the Cougar Invitational. In 15 rounds, he has recorded eight rounds under par, a team leader.

Junior Chris Heintz is ranked 86th this week. He has recorded three Top 20s, including two Top 10s and has a 73.3 scoring average.

Leslie, who won his first tournament title two weeks ago at the Pala Mesa Invitational, is the only player on the team with a 100% counter percentage. All of his 15 scores have counted in team scoring. He also boasts four Top 10s in five events.
