No. 6 Stanford Falls To No. 4 Texas, 2-0

Palm Springs, Calif. - No. 6 Stanford fell, 2-0, to No. 4 Texas in the Cardinal's second game of the day at the Palm Springs Classic. The Longhorns scored two runs in the fourth inning to top Stanford.

Both teams went through three innings scoreless to start the game. Freshman third baseman Maddy Coon was walked on base in the top of the fourth inning. Freshman pitcher Missy Penna singled to left field to advance Coon, but Texas pitcher Cat Osterman struck out two batters to end the inning.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Longhorns loaded the bases with two singles and a fielder's choice. Texas' Amber Hall and Kelly Melone were both walked home to put the Longhorns ahead, 2-0.

Lappin singled to the shortstop in the top of the sixth inning to get on base, and advanced to second off of a single by Coon to left field. Sophomore first baseman Michelle Smith then flied out to center field, moving Lappin to third. Osterman ended the inning with two more strikeouts. The Cardinal finished the seventh inning scoreless and Texas took the game, 2-0.

Sophomore pitcher Becky McCullough allowed five hits and struck out one batter in six innings, walking three batters. McCullough is 3-1 on the season. Osterman struck out 16 batters in seven innings for the Longhorns, walking one batter and allowing four hits.

Stanford returns to action tomorrow against UIC at 10:30am and No. 16 Baylor at 1:00pm in the Palm Springs Classic.
