Puhakka Wins Pac-10 Title In Men's One-Meter Dive

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. (www.thesundevils.com) -- After the third day of competition at the Pac-10 Women's Swimming Championships in Long Beach, Calif., the Sun Devils are in sixth place. In Federal Way, Wash., the Pac-10 Diving Championships continued with its second day of competition.
In diving, Arizona State University senior Joona Puhakka (Helsinki, Finland) won the men's one-meter Pac-10 championship with a score of 417.00. It is his fourth straight title in the event and his eighth Pac-10 championship overall. It marks the second day in a row Puhakka tallied over 400 points in the finals. Senior Brant Bingham (Mesa, Ariz.) finished fourth for the Sun Devils with a score of 341.95 in the one-meter dive. He finished less than one point behind the third place finisher in a close competition.
In women's swimming, sophomore Caitlin Andrew (San Antonio, Texas) competed in the finals in two events including the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard backstroke. In the 100 fly, Andrew touched the wall in a NCAA automatic qualifying time of 52.78 to finish second in the event. Her time was her fastest this season in the event. In the 100-yard backstroke, Andrew finished fourth recording a school-record time of 53.81.
ASU freshman swimmer Jen Beckberger (Ajax, Ontario) swam the 200-yard freestyle in NCAA consideration time of 1:48.82. Her time marks the team's fastest time in the event this season. Freshman Amy Konowalik (Derby, England) won the A consolation by recording a NCAA consideration time of 4:21.16. Her time is the team's fastest time in the event this season.
The Pac-10 Women's Swimming Championships continue tomorrow in Long Beach, Calif. The Pac-10 Diving Championships will continue tomorrow in Federal Way, Wash. with platform diving.
