ASU Women's Swimming Finishes Sixth At Pac-10s

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. (www.thesundevils.com) -- The women's swimming and men's and women's diving Pac-10 Championships came to a close Saturday. Arizona State University's women's swimming and diving team finished the Pac-10 meet in sixth place.
In the 400-yard freestyle relay, ASU's A team finished in third place recording the team's fastest time in the event this season touching the wall in NCAA consideration time 3:21.33. The team's time is also the fifth-fastest time in school history. The relay team consisted of sophomore Caitlin Andrew (San Antonio, Texas), freshman Jen Beckberger (Ajax, Ontario), sophomore Lindsey Brown (Saginaw, Mich.) and senior Heidi Schmidt (Visalia, Calif.).
Sophomore Sarah Fischer (Boulder, Colo.) finished in sixth place in the 1650-yard freestyle with NCAA consideration time of 16:40.68. Her time is her fastest time of the season in the event. In the 100-yard freestyle, Andrew competed in the finals finishing in seventh place with a time of 49.69. Also recording a NCAA consideration time in the 100-yard freestyle was Beckberger who touched the wall in 50.40. Freshman Amy Konowalik (Derby, England) competed in the finals for the 200-yard breaststroke and finished seventh touching the wall in NCAA consideration time of 2:16.57.
In diving, junior Cassidy Farwell (Glendale, Calif.) competed in the finals of the platform event for the Sun Devils. Farwell finished in sixth place for ASU scoring a 239.75.
ASU senior Joona Puhakka (Helsinki, Finland) was honored as the men's Pac-10 Diver of the Meet. Puhakka won Pac-10 titles in the one-meter and three-meter springboards. The championships marked the fourth-straight year he has won both springboard Pac-10 titles making him the first Pac-10 diver ever to accomplish the feat. Overall, Puhakka has earned eight Pac-10 diving championships.
The men's Pac-10 Swimming Championships held in Federal Way, Wash. will take place March 1-4.
