Baseball Takes Both Games of Doubleheader, Win Game Two 11-3

WACO, Texas - After taking the first game of the doubleheader against Baylor 9-5, the Sun Devils kept up their offensive onslaught, knocking off the Bears 11-3 in the second game to claim both ends of the twin bill. Jeff Urlaub got the start for the Devils, his second career starting nod, and picked up right where he left off last weekend.

ASU jumped on the Bears in the first inning for the second straight game, as CJ Retherford doubled down the left field line, scoring Colin Curtis and Willy Fox to give ASU an early 2-0 lead. The Sun Devils struck again in the second, as Ryan Sontag singled home Frank Mesa to put the Devils up three.

Baylor got one back in the bottom half of the second, as Seth Fortenberry scored from third after an error by Joe Persichina. Arizona State got the run back in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly by Frank Mesa that scored Retherford. The Devils added another in the fourth on an Ike Davis sac fly to right that scored Sontag.

After taking a break from scoring in the fifth, ASU got on the board yet again in the sixth. Sontag led the inning off with a walk, and he came around to score on a double to deep center by Curtis. Curtis crossed home on a single up the middle by Davis.

Baylor put one on the board in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI triple by Matt Sodolak.ASU answered right back in the top of the seventh, as Sontag single home Frank Mesa to put the Devils up 8-2. Ike Davis knocked two more home, when he singled in Sontag and Fox to make it 10-2. Davis finished the second game with four RBI, giving him five runs knocked in on the day. The Devils would tack on another in the eighth on a Ryan Sontag RBI single that scored Mesa from third.

Jeff Urlaub was once again impressive as a starter, lasting seven plus innings, allowing three runs, two earned, on only five hits. He also struck out six Bears en route to his third victory of the season. Brady Martinez worked the last two innings for the Devils. Cory VanAllen took the loss for the Bears after allowing five runs in his four innings of work. He fell to 1-1 on the season.

Ryan Sontag was 3-4 for in the nightcap, knocking in three runs and scoring three times. Ike Davis was 2-4 with four RBI and CJ Retherford was 3-5 with two runs batted in. J.J. Sferra continued his torrid Saturday, going 2-3 in the second game. On the day, Sferra was 5-7 (.714).

The Sun Devils scored in seven of the nine innings in game two, and 12 of the 18 on the day. They pounded out 14 hits in both games of the twin bill, scoring 20 runs while allowing eight.

Arizona State and Baylor will play the final game of the series on Sunday, first pitch is scheduled for Noon Arizona time. The Sun Devils started will be a game time decision.
